Varicose veins treatment with laser

Varicose veins treatment with laser

If varicose veins are causing you discomfort or concern, Skin Hospital offers you individual consultation and treatment. Laser treatment, accompanied with foam sclerotherapy and mechanical removal if necessary, is an effective and safe solution to problems caused by varicose veins. Recovery is fast and the results are excellent.

Varicose veins treatment starts with the vascular surgeon’s consultation

At the Skin Hospital, varicose veins treatment starts with the vascular surgeon’s consultation. The surgeon checks your lower limbs and asks about your symptoms.

In addition to venous and varicose vein diagnostics, the arterial circulation can be examined, for example to rule out intermittent claudication and aneurysms.

The surgeon also practically always performs an ultrasound scan that shows the blood flows in the veins, confirms the diagnosis and helps to choose the most appropriate varicose veins treatment method for each patient.

Effective and safe laser treatment for varicose veins

At the Skin Hospital, varicose veins are treated with laser ablation, supplemented by foam sclerotherapy and mechanical removal if necessary.

Laser treatment of varicose veins in a nutshell:

  • The most effective and permanent treatment for venous insufficiency of the lower limbs is laser ablation.
  • Laser treatment targets the cause of the varicose veins, treating the vein dysfunction, rather than simply removing visible varicose veins.
  • Laser treatment of varicose veins is a minimally invasive operation performed under local anaesthetic.
  • The procedure is safe and complications are rare.
  • The recovery is fast. The doctor will assess the need for a few days of sick leave.
  • As an accompanying treatment, the Skin Hospital uses foam sclerotherapy and mechanical removal of varicose veins as necessary..

Skin Hospital offers safe and individual varicose veins treatment

At the Skin Hospital, varicose veins treatment is based on an assessment of the patient’s symptoms, the condition of the varicose veins and the most appropriate treatment option.

If laser ablation is not the best treatment for the patient, treatment can be carried out solely by foam sclerotherapy or mechanically. For smaller, disturbing vascular changes, vascular laser therapy may be suitable.

Although all our procedures are very safe, our specialist will always explain the potential harms and risks associated with the procedure, the recovery process and what needs to be taken into consideration in your daily life during recovery.

Background information on varicose veins: Causes, symptoms, self-care

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that often are visible through the skin as bluish or reddish veins, especially on the legs. Varicose veins occur when the valves in the superficial veins that carry blood from the legs do not work and the blood flow is reversed. The increased venous pressure is released as visible bumps on the skin. In medicine, we talk about venous insufficiency of the lower limbs, of which varicose veins are a common symptom.

How do you recognise the early stages of varicose veins?

Varicose veins do not always bulge outwards as clearly visible swollen veins, but may show other signs:

  • You feel a heavy and squeezing sensation in your legs.
  • Leg cramps occur at night or after exercise.
  • Legs swell up, especially towards the evening.
  • The skin in the varicose vein area feels itchy.
  • The skin turns brown or reddish.

Why do some people get varicose veins?

  • Varicose veins are about 2–3 times more common in women than in men.
  • A family history of varicose veins increases the risk of varicose veins.
  • Prolonged posture, such as standing or sitting, makes it difficult for blood to flow back to the heart.
  • Obesity increases pressure on the veins.
  • Vein walls weaken with age.
  • Pregnancy and other hormonal changes in women increase the resistance of the venous return.

Self-care may ease symptoms

Lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, increasing activity and eating healthfully, can reduce the symptoms of varicose veins. Compression stockings can also bring relief. However, no amount of self-care will permanently cure varicose veins.
