John Gästgifvars has worked as a specialist in plastic surgery at HUS, for the last few years mainly at the Intensive Care and Burn Centre at Jorvi Hospital, where his work also includes treating critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. John’s main speciality is the surgical and overall treatment of burns and difficult scars, as well as minor and major scar reconstructions.
“Burn surgery encompasses a wide array of plastic surgical techniques, where you need to master reconstructive procedures on the entire body, from head to toe,” says John. He has performed a wide range of general plastic surgery, including skin tumour operations and breast surgery.
John works with dermatologists, particularly in the treatment of patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), and performs surgery on these patients. He also specialises in the laser treatment of difficult scars and vascular lesions.
For John, who is calm and attentive by nature, it is important that patients fully understand what their doctor tells them and the instructions provided to them, and that trust is established between the patient and the surgeon. “What I find rewarding in my work is a satisfied patient who has received the right kind of help for their ailment, whether it is big or small.”
John is also a native speaker of Swedish, and provides friendly, unhurried service in Finnish, Swedish and English.
