Breast reduction

Breast reduction

Breast reduction is a procedure aimed at alleviating the discomfort or direct harm caused by large breasts.

Large breasts can be uncomfortable in many ways, and breast reduction surgery alleviates the daily inconvenience or harm. The commonest reason for seeking breast reduction surgery is persistent neck and shoulder pain. The weight of the breasts pulls the posture down, resulting in constant tension in the neck and shoulder area. Having large breasts can also be a problem when it comes to everyday mobility or finding suitable clothes, among other things.

Breast reduction surgery should be considered if breast size:

  • causes pain in the neck and shoulders
  • causes skin problems and chafing
  • makes it difficult to engage in hobbies and exercise
  • makes it difficult to get dressed and find the right size clothing
  • feels out of proportion with the rest of the body

Breast reduction under general anaesthetic

Breast reduction surgery begins with a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss the person’s needs and wishes and the realistically achievable outcome. The course of treatment, the resulting scars and recovery will be discussed in full, after which a separate appointment is made for the procedure.

The breast reduction itself is performed under general anaesthetic, with the breasts being reduced to the desired size. The areolas are reduced and the nipples are raised to fit the smaller breasts. The person can be discharged later the same day.

Aftercare ensures the best results

Recovery from breast reduction is relatively quick. Painkillers are usually needed for about a week after the operation, and a return to light work is often possible about a week after the operation. If the person does more physically strenuous work, the period of sick leave may be anything up to a month. Intensive forms of exercise such as running should be avoided for the first few months.

The breast reduction scar is shaped like an anchor, and will be shown in pictures at the consultation. The aftercare of scars is particularly important and requires patience, as the scars mature and fade over a period of about six to twelve months. It is only after this time that the eventual result is visible. Scar treatment consists of regular massaging of the scar and application of ointment, as well as the use of silicone tape if necessary. Minimising scarring is a plastic surgeon’s area of special expertise, and the scars are always planned to be as inconspicuous as possible.

The procedure includes a check-up by a nurse after about a week and a follow-up inspection by a plastic surgeon after about one to two months, if the recovery has gone as expected.

Breast reduction improves quality of life

Patients who undergo breast reduction surgery are usually very satisfied with the outcome, as the surgery has a considerable impact on their quality of life. Relief from persistent pain or the removal of a weight that restricts mobility is a liberating experience that directly improves their everyday functioning. Breast reduction surgery is most often about correcting a functional impairment to the greatest extent, while also ensuring a good aesthetic outcome.
