Plastic surgery

A plastic surgeon is an expert in cosmetic treatment. You can book a consultation when you have any concerns related to appearance, perhaps due to an illness, or if you’re interested in a purely cosmetic procedure.

Plastic surgery services include:

  • Smoothing wrinkles and fine lines
  • Scar revisions and laser treatment of acne scars
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Lipotransfers
  • Facelifts and neck lifts
  • Mole removals

The need for treatment is assessed at the first appointment

Before than carrying out the procedure immediately, the treatment path begins with a consultation where the surgeon reviews the person’s overall situation and treatment goals. This first appointment allows you to discuss your needs and anything else that is on your mind regarding the procedure. Your surgeon will interview you and present different treatment options and the results these can be used to achieve. The surgeon will also walk you through the steps you can take to prepare for the upcoming procedure, the associated risks and aftercare instructions.

All decisions are made jointly with the surgeon. If the benefits achieved through the treatment outweigh the risks, a new appointment can be made for the procedure itself. Many mole removal operations and injections used to treat fine lines can be carried out at the second appointment.

The prices for the different procedures depend on their duration and the method used. At your first appointment, you will also receive a cost estimate for your procedure.

Smoothing wrinkles and fine lines with injection treatments

Injections are an effective and safe way to prevent signs of aging on the skin. Wrinkles around the eyes or mouth, as well as vertical lines on the forehead, are typical concerns that can be corrected using filler injections. Injections can also help with sunken cheeks, or applied to the armpits to prevent excessive sweating.

There are two types of injections available: filler, and botulinum treatment. The plastic surgeon will determine the best option for the best results. Injections are generally very quick procedures. The results can be seen immediately, and the recovery does not take long. Treatments can often be administered during the first consultation appointment. If necessary, a separate time can be booked for the procedure.

Surgical and laser scar revisions

Plastic surgeons can also carry out scar revision, a procedure which minimises the visibility of the scar. This can be done using laser treatment, or the direction of the scar can be changed with skin grafts so that it conforms to the direction of the surrounding skin lines, making it less visible.  If the scar tissue is particularly deep, it can even be cut out, or the hollow spot left by a scar can be filled with a subcutaneous lipotransfer.

Scar revision can only be performed about a year after the scar was caused at the earliest. Scars tend to heal slowly, and when the natural healing process is given enough time to take its course no surgery may be needed.

The need for scar revision is always discussed at the initial appointment before the procedure is performed. During the appointment, the plastic surgeon will walk you through the goals, associated risks and tell you what results you can realistically expect. Based on the initial discussion, the surgeon and patient will agree jointly on which treatment option to proceed with.

Eyelid surgeries are performed for both medical and aesthetic reasons.

Eyelid surgery is a very common, minor procedure for correcting tired-looking or droopy eyelids. Upper eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is performed when the excess skin on the upper eyelid is causing discomfort by pressing on the lash line.

Excess skin on the upper eyelid can also cause muscle tension and headaches, since the person will often have to raise their eyebrows to avoid an unpleasant feeling of pressure on the eyelid. In some cases, the excess skin may even cause the eyelids droop onto the corners of the eye, narrowing the field of vision. If the field of vision is restricted, the surgery is considered a part of public healthcare and therefore qualifies for reimbursement by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela).

The eyelid surgery and individual treatment plan are always discussed in advance with a plastic surgeon. After the initial appointment, you can book a time for the procedure.

Surgical or laser mole removals

Plastic surgeons can also remove moles, including those on the face. Generally, moles are be removed if there is reason to suspect a skin alteration, but they may also be treated due to discomfort or for aesthetic reasons.

Our plastic surgery services also include carbon dioxide laser treatment for quick and effective removal of certain types of moles. Moles may also be removed surgically, in which case the cosmetic effects of the procedure are evaluated in advance. Naturally, the plastic surgeon will also take steps to minimise the visible traces left by the procedure itself.

Single moles on an easily accessible part of the body can sometimes be removed during the first appointment, but usually a separate time is booked for the procedure after the consultation.
