Many skin alterations can be removed quickly and permanently with a laser
A variety of skin alterations can be treated by laser if surgery would be unnecessary and challenging. Lasers are precise and recovery is relatively fast. The advanced carbon dioxide laser at the Ihosairaala uses ultra short pulse technology and is ideal for treating the following skin alterations:
- Seborrhoeic keratosis (brown warts)
- Intradermal nevi (common moles), particularly in the facial area
- Xanthelasma, or yellowish cholesterol deposits under the eyelids
- Various cysts, such as milium cysts and hidrocystoma
- Myxoid cysts
- Stubborn, individual warts
- Earlobe keloids i.e. excessive scar tissue
How does laser treatment work?
Laser treatment typically begins with a dermatologist’s consultation, discussing the necessary procedures and assessing the results that can be achieved. Then a longer appointment is made for the procedure. Smallish alterations and cysts, such as xanthelasmas, milium cysts and warts on the hands can be removed with a laser during the first consultation, at the doctor’s discretion.
Laser procedures at the Ihosairaala are done with local anaesthetic. In many cases, patients can return to work straight afterwards. However, following more extensive and deeper treatments, you should be prepared for a short period of sick leave:in most cases, the skin reddens after the treatment, and a scab may form within a week after larger procedures. The scab will fall off and the skin will begin recovering during the following week.
Following any laser procedures, you should use a powerful sunscreen (SPF 50+) for two months to avoid pigment changes.
