Moles and skin alterations are removed for two main reasons:
- Suspicion arises during an inspection of a malign mole or skin alteration
- A mole or skin alteration catches on the patient’s clothes or causes a cosmetic inconvenience to the extent that removal is considered necessary, even if there was no indication of its being malign
All procedures are made at the dermatologist’s discretion, while taking account of the patient’s wishes. A sample can be taken of a suspicious mole or other skin alteration for more detailed diagnostics, or the mole can be removed entirely. Any removed moles are sent to be studied by a pathologist, to ascertain whether they are benign or malign.
In many cases, the procedure can be carried out during the first consultation
When booking an appointment for a mole removal, you should take account of the number and location of the moles. The mole removal method is jointly agreed in the doctor’s surgery. Some of our more surgically oriented doctors will remove moles in easy places during the first, 20-minute appointment. However, you should usually make a double appointment, that is, two 20-minute appointments.
In most cases, a removed mole is sent for a pathological examination, to determine whether it is malignant and further treatment is necessary. The total price for mole removal generally varies between EUR 334-557e, depending on the situation, removal method and possible pathological examinations.
In many cases, one, two or three moles can be removed in a short, 20-minute session, but a longer time should be booked for a higher number of moles. If a mole is in a difficult place or the moles are in different parts of the body, you should also allow for more time or a separate appointment for the procedure. Skin alterations may also be treatable without surgery
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a form of treatment using light and a photosensitising chemical substance, enabling the treatment of certain skin alterations without surgery. PDT can be used for treating the early stages of squamous cell carcinoma, and for the treatment of basal-cell carcinoma. The photosensitising substance is spread on the skin, so that the light only affects mutated cells. Combined with daylight, PDT has also been found to be an effective rejuvenation treatment.
