The treatment need is largely based on the patient’s view
Acne has been found to have a major impact on self esteem, and deeply affects patients on a personal level. Many struggle on their own, trying to overcome acne with home cures. If left untreated, at worst acne can be painful and result in scars which cause long-term problems.
You should make an appointment if the self-treatment you have tried does not seem to work and the acne persists. You should also contact an expert if your acne seems to continue for a long period, or flares up at an unusual age.
A dermatologist will identify the acne type and suggest a suitable treatment
Our experienced dermatologists will have no trouble identifying your particular kind of acne. In most cases, a diagnosis is made visually and by touching the skin. The patient is also asked to provide background information on any hereditary factors, and treatment methods tried at home. Lab test are rarely needed to make a diagnosis.
Based on the examination and discussion, the doctor will suggest a treatment that will help to keep your acne under control. Treatments vary from individual skin care instructions to various drug treatments, of which the most potent is isotretinoin.
When any of the more potent drugs are used, we need not only the background information provided by the patient, but also laboratory tests to ensure that the patient’s vital organs, such as the liver, are functioning properly. Scars caused by severe acne can be treated with chemical exfoliation and smoothing with a carbon dioxide laser, but only when the acne is past its active stage. Not just drug treatment
In addition to drug treatment, skin care instructions can be given to patients during treatment. A dermatologist will know how to clean the skin properly, what kind of make-up can be used, and how concealers can be used to help patients cope better with a skin condition affecting their appearance.
Acne patients should avoid squeezing whiteheads and blackheads, which can make the inflammation worse.Acne treatment requires the patient to have patience, because the results will not be seen until weeks later, sometimes even months. However, acne treatment usually achieves excellent results and practically all types of acne can be treated, although the condition may recur.
Our experts are familiar with specific cases of acne, such as acne affecting professional athletes or people who train hard, pre-teen acne, acne during pregnancy, and types of acne that are difficult to treat. Our dermatologists specialising in acne have the tools to deal with even the most difficult cases.
